JOS SMOLDERS

KOMMA #55 - music
28.03 2026

Jos Smolders (born 1960) grew up in the south of the Netherlands and is self-taught. By reading all the books available in the library of his hometown, Smolders developed an interest in art. This led to various experiments in the creative field. A curious mind and an insatiable urge to explore the world of sound led Smolders to music outside the traditional domain.
During his studies at the Delft University of Technology, experimenting with sound became an almost continuous part of his activities. He founded the electronic improvisation collective THU20 and wrote about his ideas on music in reviews for magazines.
Smolders is active in various domains: he is a solo artist, collaborates with other artists, writes interviews and reviews, performs, produces, and masters music.

The sound of Jos Smolders always exists on the boundary between abstraction and narrative. Concrete, everyday sounds merge into complex layers of sound. At times it is loud, but not for long, as things are constantly in motion, like a river of continuously changing matter. Works can be experienced as landscapes or objects; they move and carry the listener along through a story of sound.

Jos Smolders responds to the exhibition Schemergebied. The performance will take place on Saturday 28 March at 3.30pm.
